There are several reasons why jewelry may become dull (like water, creams or lotions), but the most common problem with fashion jewelry that has been packed away, is that over time the metal is exposed to elements in the air which cause a chemical reaction, leaving them tarnished or discolored.

To give your favorite jewelry pieces new life, use the following: baking soda, salt & aluminum foil.  Line a plate or found pan with a sheet of aluminum foil, shiny side up. Lay all of your darkened costume jewelry on the foil. Mix one tablespoon salt and one tablespoon of baking soda and mix with one cup warm water. Pour into the dish. The mixture will create a chemical reaction with the foil and bubble as it cleans the jewelry. Rinse with cool water and buff dry with a clean cloth.
